Nye County, with an estimated population of 46,308 in 2007 with 18,159 square miles, is the third largest county in terms of area in the United States. The federal government owns 92 percent of the land. Tonopah, the county seat, has a declining population of about 2,500. Pahrump, 160 miles south of Tonopah and 50 miles northwest of Las Vegas, has an estimated population of about 40,000 in 2007 and is the major town at the southern edge of the county. There are no incorporated cities in Nye County although there have been on-going attempts to incorporate Pahrump with 87 percent of the county population. The five-story, 54-room Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah was opened on November 17, 1908, and was Nevada's tallest building until 1929. It was among the first buildings in the state with electricity and an elevator and the hotel is now included on the National Registry of Historic Places. |

The five-story Belvada building, across the street from the Mizpah, once served as the Nevada First National Bank of Tonopah. The building was cleaned up and re-opened with much fanfare in 2006 then shut down again. |

The Golden Building was built in 1902 and it was the first large, stone, commercial building erected in Tonopah. It was named after Frank Golden, an early businessman and banker. The building was first occupied by the Nye County Bank, the first bank in Tonopah, and has housed the Masonic Lodge since 1911. |

Newer areas of town include Tonopah High School, home of the fighting Muckers, McDonald's, and the Senior Center. McDonald's is on Highway 95 in front of the high school. |
